Espresso vs Filter: What’s the Difference?

Coffee has many personalities. Brew it one way, and you’ll get something intense and rich. Brew it another, and it turns delicate and open. You could take the very same beans and brew them as espresso or as filter, and the cups would taste nothing alike. Espresso is a snapshot. It's concentrated, immediate, and bold. Filter is a slow reveal. It's open, balanced, and layered.

Espresso is brewed under pressure. Around nine bars of pressure push hot water through a tightly packed puck of finely ground coffee. Because the water is moving so quickly, usually just 25 to 30 seconds, it extracts concentrated flavours and oils in a short burst. That is why espresso tastes strong, syrupy, and bold, with a layer of crema formed by the emulsified oils and gases.

Filter coffee works by gravity instead of pressure. Water flows slowly through a bed of coarser grounds over several minutes. This longer contact time extracts a different balance of compounds, producing more of the delicate aromatics, acids, and sugars, but fewer of the heavy oils. The result is a cleaner, lighter cup with more separation between flavours.

Because espresso is so concentrated, a shot is usually only about 30ml. Small, but powerful. It is intense on its own and often used as the base for milk drinks like flat whites, cappuccinos, and lattes. Filter coffee is brewed in larger volumes, usually 200 to 300ml, and has a lighter body. It is meant to be sipped slowly, giving you time to notice flavour changes as it cools.

The flavour expression is also distinct. Espresso captures intensity, with chocolate, caramel, spice, or fruit notes compressed into a quick hit. Filter is more expansive, offering clarity and nuance, the wide-angle view compared to espresso's close-up.

So which is better? Neither. They are just different ways of showing what coffee can do. The same beans can tell two completely different stories depending on whether they are brewed as espresso or filter.

If you enjoy intensity and routine, espresso might be the one for you. If you want to explore more detail and variety in flavour, filter is a great place to start. The best part is that you do not have to choose. Try both and see how your coffee shifts between the two!
